01/13/2004 Archived Entry: "Other Summers: The Photographs of Horace Engle"

Horace Engle is not a well known photographer. He was really a snapshooter, but I came across a book about him, Other Summers: The photographs of Horace Engle and I'm really facinated by the man's work. He is the only photographer I've heard of who actually used nineteenth century "spy" cameras made to be hidden under a vest. His candid shots are amazing pieces of real nineteenth century life. They seem both very old fashioned and just a little modern. The round shape of the pictures has to do with the camera used. The negatives themselves where circular, each with several circular images. Engle himself was a sort of talented failure with broad interests, much energy, and little success.

That is a great picture. I wonder if the people back then were really that thin or if the camera took true pictures.

Looking over lots of photos he made, I've come to the conclusion that people were thin back then. It was a world of very few autos, many corsets, and couch potatos.
