01/21/2004 Archived Entry: "Sorig is Gone"

I decided that with two young birds growing up, and two eggs being incubated by Ludvig, the cage was getting too crowded. Sorig, the oldest of my second generation of pigeons, was the logical fellow to let go, and so I did late afternoon yesterday.

I though about taking him nearby and find a flock of pigeons, and release him and hope he makes friends. Pigeons are gregarious. Then I thought that he might like the option of finding his way home (to me), so I simply put him on my window ledge. He stood there for some time. I think he might have been frightened of heights. I'm several stories off the ground in my apartment. He looked like he was trying to get back in. My husband and I got up to help coax him to the open window, but we just spooked him and he flew to a different sill. He was there probably an hour. An hour after that he was gone.

I'm really worried about him. Last night I could barely sleep thinking about him frightened, cold, and lonely.

I hope he is OK. I'm leaving the window propped open so he can fly back if he wants, and if he hasn't already forgotten about his family.

He is wearing a small tag on his leg with "SORIG" written on it. Now I can't walk by a group of pigeons without looking for a tagged leg.

Now I'll be looking for a tagged
pigeon too.

BTW. It's a green tag.
