03/31/2005 Archived Entry: "Dr Who: I care"
The BBC has been filming new Dr Who episodes. I have to admit, I care, I really really care. Unless you are very nerdy (me?), or under 30 years old (not me), British accent fetishists (not me), or just weird (me?), you shouldn't care. I however care, very much.
Douglas Adams of Hitchhiker's Guide fame wrote some scripts for the Doctor. Harlan Ellison cares about Dr Who. There are huge Dr Who conventions, but Whovians tend to be more critical of Dr Who than Trekkies of Star Trek. You can love and respect the Doctor and what he represents without giving up making fun of poor editing, weird acting, and terrible casting. Bad special effects are so easy to make fun of I think it's a little declasse to do so. You don't go to the Special Olympics to heckle.
He's not back in America yet, but I'm sure he will appear. A real new Doctor! Doctor #9! Soon there will be Doctor #10. Of course I'm talking about regenerations. There was that nasty little American made Dr Who -- just one episode, it was -- let's not dwell on ugly memories. Let's ponder who will be next season's Doctor.
