Seth MacFarlan in making American Dad has fallen for the dull world of corporate caution. I can imagine the meetings where executives are wanting to ride the popularity of Family Guy with a new show. Ideally they want to make a totally new show without taking too many risks. Well the talking dog was popular, but let's make it even more funny by making it a talking fish! Oh but let's give it a funny accent. German would be good because it is sort of a scarey language, and Stewey was sort of scary in a funny way. How about the dad himself? Can't do Peter Griffin again, so let's attract the left wingers out there by making him have something to do with national security, but he's an idiot. This will play to the demographic perfectly. He will be with the CIA, which will give us an excuse to have an alien. Alien in a suburban family -- that's funny! Every times he farts or does anything gross it will be sure to get laughs. We can have a liberal daughter for conflict with dad's conservative stupidity. And the dad needs a son. Meg was a loser in Family Guy, but this time we can make the son the loser. Simple! Script? Again simple. The Dad does something stupid, the son get embarrassed, the wife does hardly anything, the fish is witty, and the Alien does something vulgar. In short, American Dad reeks of being a cheap knock-off.
